Firstly I would like to thank all of you who attended the AGM on Wednesday. Of our eligible financial members 56 were present and I was pleased to be returned to the position of President.
I acknowledged, at the meeting, my admiration for David Nelson who also nominated for the position. David’s talents for production, direction and acting have been evident in the many years he has been a member and I am sure “Kinky Boots” will also be a success under his direction. I, along with many of our membership, am really looking forward to seeing this musical production!
There were some issues on the night of the AGM with regard to valid financial membership, and I would like to clarify this situation. As many of you will know all clubs and associations have been required to rewrite their constitutions (now called the Rules of Association). These rules and regulations apply to all community theatre groups and other clubs. Our new Rules set out very clearly what is required regarding Annual General Meetings and financial membership and we followed these Rules. The information about these Rules was circulated to members via their email contacts. No system is infallible and it is possible that some were not aware of this situation.
One Rule which was queried with me on the night is the requirement for a person to have been a financial member for 3 months prior to an AGM. This is common practice and is in place to ensure that those who are voting have some knowledge of the club and its personnel. The other bone of contention was the fact that in order to vote, a member had to have been financial at the date when the meeting was advised. Again this is part of the new Rules under which we are now governed. There is a system in place for advising members when their subscriptions are due, and we will be checking to make sure that this process is working efficiently.
If any member has a query regarding the AGM process, membership or any other issue, please contact one of the committee so that accurate information, and not gossip or rumour, can be clarified.
We will be profiling each of the club’s committee in coming newsletters but so that you know who’s who, here’s a list.
